We’re in the midst of 49 consecutive days with at least one football game (pro or college) on the schedule, and Conference USA (CUSA) takes center stage tonight with Delaware vs. Jacksonville State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Delaware (3-2 SU, 2-2-1 ATS), in its first year of competition at the FBS level, is coming off a heartbreaking 27-24 loss to CUSA powerhouse Western Kentucky. Jacksonville State (3-3 SU, 2-4 ATS) held on for a 29-27 victory over winless Sam Houston State.
Delaware is a 3-point road favorite with a total of 57.5 at BetMGM at the time of publication. Let’s dig into this key CUSA matchup and (hopefully) cash some tickets. If you were on our Monday Night Football selections, you enjoyed a 3-0 night after the Falcons beat the Bills, 24-14.
Best Bet for Delaware vs. Jacksonville State: Against the Spread
Jacksonville State +3 (-115)
Jacksonville State is led by RB Cam Cook, who leads the nation in rushing with 832 yards on the season. The Gamecocks are the third-best rushing team in the country, averaging 279.5 yards on the ground.
Expect a steady dose of ground-and-pound tonight, as Jacksonville State has run the ball 293 times compared to only 143 pass attempts. Freshman Caden Creel got his first start at quarterback last week in the win over Sam Houston State. Creel rushed for 132 yards on 24 carries.
Delaware’s defense gives up an average of 154.6 rushing yards, and it will need to shore that up to win and cover on the road. The Blue Hens are 0-2 ATS as a favorite this season, after failing to cover against Delaware State in the season opener and last week against Western Kentucky.
Delaware rates the edge at the QB position with Nick Minicucci (1,379 passing yards, 8 TDs, and three interceptions). Minicucci threw for a season-high 314 yards last week versus Western Kentucky, but failed to throw a touchdown and got picked off once.
The junior signal caller has a 64.9 completion percentage. Notably, though, he’s been sacked 10 times this season. That could be a problem against a Jacksonville State defense that ranks 33rd nationally with 2.4 sacks per game.
Give us the home dog and the points in what should be an entertaining CUSA contest.
Best Player Prop Bet for Jacksonville State
Cam Cook to Score 2+ Touchdowns (+170)
It seems daunting to back any player to score twice, but there’s solid evidence to back Cook here.
The nation’s leading rusher has scored multiple TDs in three of five games this season. Cook burned Liberty, Murray State, and most recently, Western Kentucky with a pair of TDs. Delaware’s defense has allowed eight rushing TDs, and Cook will be the best running back the Blue Hens have faced.
Cook is worth a toss at these juicy odds via DraftKings.
Best Player Prop Bet for Delaware
Nick Minicucci OVER 260.5 Passing Yards (-114)
Delaware’s quarterback has comfortably covered this number in four of five games. As mentioned, Minicucci is coming off a 314-yard peak passing performance against Western Kentucky.
Jacksonville’s defense ranks about mid-pack nationally (225 yards per game), but expect Minicucci to exceed expectations tonight.
