More than a decade after the last instalment, Microgaming has renewed its agreement with Square Enix and will produce a third Tomb Raider branded online slot.

The new title will be developed for Microgaming by Triple Edge Studios and comes 15 years after the first release in the series, 2004’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

To be unveiled at ICE in London early next month, the slot follows 2008’s sequel, Tomb Raider: Secret of the Sword.

With an anticipated 2019 release, the new game will again feature the fearless Croft, leading players on a new quest unearthing ancient trails and rewarding discoveries.

Andrew Clucas, chief operating officer at Microgaming, said: “We are incredibly excited to announce the renewal of our historic partnership with Square Enix to develop a new Lara Croft online slot game that honours and builds on the brand’s massive popularity in the gaming industry, film and beyond.

“[This year] is our 15th anniversary with the brand and we plan to celebrate the unprecedented milestone with a wave of big reveals on another show-stopping stand at ICE.”

Janet Swallow, vice president of licensing at Square Enix West, added: “We look forward to continue working with Microgaming to develop another successful branded online slot game.

“We are excited to see a new action-packed Lara Croft adventure launch to the igaming world and look forward to the big reveal at ICE 2019.”

The first Tomb Raider video game was released in October 1996, since when the franchise has sold more than 67 million units, making protagonist Lara Croft the best-selling video game heroine.

Now a pop-culture icon, Croft has featured in a series of successful films, products, merchandise and in online slot form through the exclusive development partnership with Microgaming.
