Spain’s Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling has published its third quarter financial report for 2023, with the total GGR for the country’s industry standing at just over €304m.
From 78 operators across betting, bingo, casino, contests and poker, the Spanish gambling regulator stated that the €304.26m earned in GGR during Q3 was 23.6 per cent higher than the previous year, but down 2.67 per cent in comparison to the previous quarter.
Similar quarterly and yearly trends to GGR were seen across deposits and withdrawals. Deposits were up 11.87 per cent year-over-year, but down 0.45 per cent quarter-over-quarter. Withdrawals improved by 8.07 per cent YoY but fell by 2.92 per cent QoQ.
Breaking down the GGR per vertical, the DGOJ declared that €113.49m came from betting (42 operators), €3.64m from bingo (three operators), €160.26m from casino (50 operators), €50,000 from contests (two operators) and €26.81m from poker (nine operators).
Casino’s €160.26m rose by 25.25 per cent YoY and 6.94 per cent QoQ. Live roulette rose by 27.81 per cent YoY, while slots improved by 25.94 per cent. In comparison to the previous quarter, blackjack increased by 11.47 per cent, slots grew by 8.09 per cent, live roulette rose by 5.43 per cent and conventional roulette declined by 2.16 per cent.
Poker GGR increased by 22.03 per cent YoY and 4.09 per cent QoQ. Tournament rose by 31.34 per cent YoY and 3.37 per cent QoQ, while cash improved by 2.06 per cent YoY and 6.12 per cent QoQ.
Betting GGR improved by 22.66 per cent YoY, but declined by 14.86 per cent QoQ, with decreases occurring in pre-match (31.7 per cent drop), in-played sportsbook (0.26 per cent drop) and horseracing fixed-odds (9.52 per cent drop). Other fixed odds betting increased by 46.08 per cent.
Bingo GGR fell by 0.95 per cent YoY but grew by 2.91 per cent QoQ. Contests rose by 56.64 per cent YoY but dropped by 68.37 per cent QoQ.
The DGOJ claimed that marketing expenses for Q3 came in at €93.33m, up 12.01 per cent from the previous year, but down 4.93 per cent from the previous quarter – €11.57m in affiliation expenses, €870,000 in sponsorship, €47.68m in promotions and € 33.2m in advertising.
Regarding promotions, the cost of bonus included in prizes came in at €12.28m, while the cost of bonus not included in prizes stood at €35.4m.
The Spanish regulator added that new accounts stood at 322,709 at the end of the quarter, with a monthly average of 107,570, an increase of 4.49 per cent YoY and an uptick of 4.64 per cent QoQ.
The monthly average of active game accounts was 1,082,743, up 10.61 per cent YoY, but down 4.58 per cent QoQ.
