PointsBet hails Canadian approval as a ‘momentous step’

PointsBet has called the approval of PointsBet Canada as a “momentous step” in unveiling its “authentically Canadian gaming experience” to the province on Ontario.

Approved by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, PointsBet Canada will be the company’s licensed sportsbook in Ontario effective April 4, 2022 – the same date as the launch of the province’s regulated igaming market.

Originally expected to be operational in December, 2021, the igaming launch in Ontario is said to establish a new online gaming platform that is said to “help protect consumers and provide more choice”.

“Since day one, we have remained genuine to our promise of building a Canadian sportsbook, with Canadian employees, for the Canadian market,” explained Scott Vanderwel, chief executive officer at PointsBet Canada.

“In just 60 days, PointsBet Canada’s unmatched speed and ease of use, unrivalled in-game betting capabilities, and unique local partnerships will bring Ontario sports fans a new, responsible, and dynamic form of sports betting and entertainment.”

Echoing the thoughts of Vanderwel, Chantal Cipriano, vice-president, legal, compliance and people at PointsBet Canada, expressed her pride at being “one of the first” igaming operators regulated by the AGCO.

On the approval, she stated: “It demonstrates the confidence that regulators have in our ability to deliver an innovative, safe, and responsible experience to Ontario consumers. We look forward to applying our expertise from Australia and the United States to help build a trusted, competitive, regulated igaming market in Ontario, establishing an important foundation for our nation.
