Canada Dominates Men’s Olympic Hockey Competition
Canada has won more medals (16) than any other country in men’s hockey competition at the Olympics. Canada also has the most gold medals, at nine, with the most recent coming in 2014.
Sidney Crosby returns as captain of Canada at the age of 38. As the only remaining player from the 2014 team, Crosby is in search of his third gold medal. Crosby is best remembered for scoring the game-winning goal against Team USA in the championship game at the 2010 Games in Vancouver.
Edmonton’s Connor McDavid and Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon add to the Canadian team’s star power. Jordan Binnington is slated to be the starting goalie after helping Canada win last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off. He started every game in that competition.
What are Team USA’s Chances of Winning Gold?
At odds of +210, Team USA is priced as the second betting favorite at FanDuel. The Americans have a 32.26% implied probability of winning at those odds.
The US has ample motivation after losing to Canada, 3-2, in the 4 Nations Face-Off championship game. That was the same final score in overtime when Canada won gold back in 2010.
Toronto’s Auston Matthews will captain Team USA. Matthews and VGK’s Jack Eichel will lead the US offensively. There are some lingering injury concerns for two high-profile players in Jack Hughes (hand) and Matthew Tkachuk, who is still on the mend after preseason surgery.
Team USA is bringing the same trio of goaltenders that played in the 4 Nations Face-Off. Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck returns as the starter after posting a 1.59 goals against average in three 4 Nations games. Hellebuyck is the reigning Hart Trophy winner as the NHL MVP. He also won last year’s Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goalie.
The US will compete in Group C along with Latvia, Denmark, and Germany. The Americans, who will be favored in all three games, should emerge as the group winner. Here is the schedule of games:
- Thursday, Feb. 12: Latvia vs. USA, 3:10 p.m.
- Saturday, Feb. 14: USA vs. Denmark, 3:10 p.m.
- Sunday, Feb. 15: USA vs. Germany, 3:10 p.m
The US will attempt to win its third gold medal. The Americans captured gold in 1960 and then shocked the world with the “Miracle on Ice” in Lake Placid back in 1980. They’ve also won eight silver medals and one bronze medal.
