The PGA Tour’s biggest event to date comes this week with The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Florida.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy‘s status is uncertain due to a back injury. He was forced to withdraw from last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, which Akshay Bhatia won after a playoff over Daniel Berger in Orlando.

Best Bet on Favorite to Win Players Championship

Collin Morikawa (+2050)

Collin Morikawa‘s current form is as good as, if not better than, anyone on tour. After employing a new mallet-style putter at Pebble Beach, Morikawa went on to win the AT&T Pro-Am. He then finished T-7 in the Genesis before posting a solo fifth at last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, both of which were also signature events.

Morikawa finished T-10 in last year’s Players Championship, his best result in five starts. Notably, he lost strokes putting in all of those starts, but the new flat stick could help cure those struggles. He’s failed to lose strokes putting over the last three events this season.

Morikawa ranks fifth on tour in strokes gained approach, another key metric to consider at TPC Sawgrass. Expect him to be in the mix on Sunday.

Best Bet on Sleeper Pick to Win Players Championship

Ludvig Aberg (+2900)

The smooth Swede’s ball-striking was solid at last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, where Ludvig Aberg took home a T-3 finish. He’s gained strokes in every significant category over the last two events, which also included a T-20 at the Genesis Invitational.

Aberg missed the cut here last year, but turned in an eight-place finish in his tournament debut the year prior. He owns both distance and accuracy of the tee. One stat we love this week: Aberg ranks fourth on tour in proximity this season. That bodes well for birdies.

Best Bet on Longshot to Win Players Championship

Nicolai Hojgaard (+9200)

We had Nicolai Hojgaard as our longshot play for last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, and he finished T-24. One marginally bad week doesn’t change the fact that the Dane went T-3 at the WM Phoenix Open and T-6 at the Cognizant Classic in his previous two events.

The Players Championship stage won’t be too big for Hojgaard, who ranks fifth on tour in total strokes gained and sixth from tee to green. He missed his first two cuts at The Players, and that’s reflected in these bomb odds. We’ll lean on his overall recent form and hope for a huge payday come Sunday.
