The winless UMass Minutemen hit the road to take on the Akron Zips as part of tonight’s MAC doubleheader, which also includes Miami (OH) vs. Ohio. UMass vs. Akron kicks off at 7 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network.
UMass (0-8 SU, 2-6 ATS) surrenders a shade under 36 points per game. Akron (3-6 SU, 4-5 ATS) isn’t exactly an offensive juggernaut, but the Zips are an 11.5-point favorite tonight at DraftKings. The total is set at 55.5.
Patrons at DraftKings are all over the favorite, with 84% of the spread handle and 78% of tickets on Akron.
UMass vs. Akron Best Bet: Team Total
Akron OVER 30.5 Points (-125 at DraftKings)
Only Kent State gives up more points among MAC teams than UMass, which remains the only winless team in conference play at 0-4. The Minutemen have allowed 33.5 points per game against MAC foes.
UMass is particularly susceptible through the air, allowing 256.1 passing yards per contest. Akron QB Ben Finley is in line for a big game after throwing for 230 yards and a pair of TDs in last week’s 24-16 win over Buffalo.
WRs Kyan Mason and Israel Polk have combined to amass 740 passing yards and nine TDs. Both players should feast against a weak pass defense.
UMass vs. Akron Best Bet: Against the Spread
Akron -11.5 (-105 at DraftKings)
The Zips have only been a double-digit favorite just once this season. Akron spotted Duquesne 10.5 points, and produced its highest scoring output in a 51-7 romp and easy cover.
The Minutemen have the dubious distinction of having the nation’s worst scoring offense (9.4 points per game) and total offense (254 yards per game) in the country. That’s difficult to do, but UMass found a way.
We’re not expecting a 44-point differential tonight, but it’d be a surprise to see Akron win by less than 14 points. Don’t overthink this one. Lay the wood with the much better team playing at home against a historically bad team in UMass.
Best Player Prop for Akron Zips
Ben Finley OVER 237 Passing Yards (-114 at FanDuel)
Finley averages 240.6 passing yards in conference games, and now he’ll face the MAC’s softest defenses in back-to-back weeks. Expect him to start fast against UMass tonight before taking on Kent State next week.
We like Finley to cover this number, and possibly threaten his season-high of 291 passing yards in a loss to Ball State.
