Casinos in Argentina’s Buenos Aires Province must ban child support defaulters from entry or face legal punishment.

The Argentinean media outlet El Eco reported that lawmakers in the province have voted in favor of a law that forbids anyone with outstanding child support bills from entering casinos, bingo halls, or other gambling establishments. The law comes into force this month.

Anyone whose name appears on the Province’s Registry of Delinquent Child Support Debtors must be barred from all regulated gambling operations in Buenos Aires, officials announced.

The registry comprises individuals who have failed to pay three consecutive installments or five non-consecutive installments.

Child Support: Gambling Crackdown

The province’s Executive Branch will take charge of ensuring casino operators comply with the new rules.

Courts have been given new powers to fine casinos and other gambling providers that fail to carry out inspections.

The law stipulates that in the case of repeat offenders, judges can order casinos to close temporarily or even permanently.

The new law was authored by the lawmaker Germán Di Cesare. Di Cesare is a member of the Peronist party Frente Renovador, known in English as the Renewal Front.

“We can no longer tolerate a failure to pay child support without consequences,” Di Cesare said. “Paying child support is a legal obligation. It is a non-negotiable social responsibility.”

US Efforts to Combat Problem

Several US states have imposed similar rules. However, these differ in one respect. They focus on child support defaulters who win money in casinos, rather than blocking these individuals from entry.

Under the terms of the New Jersey Administrative Code, casino operators must check if bettors who win $50,000 or more are in arrears of a child support order.

If they discover that a winner is behind on child support benefits, casinos must withhold winnings and send them to the state’s Probation Division.

The state also uses its child support monitoring system to track obligations from all sources of income, including casino winnings.

And in Nebraska, state authorities last month revealed they had collected over $200,000 in gambling winnings from child support defaulters. This announcement comes just three months after the state launched its own collection program.

Per the media outlet 1011 Now, Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen said, “This program ensures funds are being used to help support kids across Nebraska. Parents have an obligation to their children, and we’re guaranteeing their well-being by collecting these winnings.”

Late last year, a Buenos Aires court froze assets worth around $5 million as part of a probe into a suspected online gambling mastermind.
