Waialae Country Club rewards accuracy over distance, as a short par-70 golf course. Putting will be a key consideration this week, and we’ll factor that into our win bets.
Best Bet on Favorite to Win Sony Open
Ben Griffin (+1700)
Ben Griffin enjoyed a breakout season in 2025, with his first three victories on the PGA Tour. He teamed with partner Andrew Novak to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and then scored solo wins at the Charles Schwab Challenge and World Wide Technology Championship.
Griffin was rewarded with a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Underdog Europe beat the U.S. 15-13, as we correctly predicted to cash a +170 winning ticket.
Griffin ranks well in the PGA Tour’s Shots Gained: Putting metric. He ended last year at 19th with a .407 average. His most recent form also bodes well. Griffin finished 10-2-1 in his last three starts.
Griffin’s best finish in the Sony Open (T-12) came in 2023.
Best Bet on Sleeper Pick to Win Sony Open
Chris Kirk (+4000)
Chris Kirk is a horse for this course with two top-three finishes in the Sony Open. He also owns a win on Hawaiian soil, after opening the 2024 with a victory in The Sentry.
Kirk has fared well on similar courses with wins at Colonial and Sea Island, the latter of which also features Bermuda grass. He’s proven to be a capable putter on that surface.
His accuracy on approach shots will also benefit him here. Kirk owns a 0.904 average over his past five tournaments in SG: Approach. Kirk finished last season with two top-10 finishes in his last three events.
Best Bet on Underdog to Win Sony Open
Seamus Power (+9000)
Seamus Power‘s best finish (T-3) here came in 2022 when he finished -19, three strokes better than Taylor’s win last year. Notably, the Irish golfer’s last win came in the Bermuda Championship on a similar course.
In November, he turned in a T-11 finish in that same event before finishing the year with a T-7 in the RSM Classic. Power’s strong iron play over the last five events resulted in a solid SG: Approach mark of 0.425. Unfortunately, he’s struggled with the putter during that span, with an average SG: Putting metric of -0.146 .
At these odds, we’ll hope Power shores up his putting and puts himself in a position to win.
