A kicker has never been named MVP in the 59-year history of the Super Bowl, but that didn’t stop one New Jersey bettor from doubling down on Sunday’s Big Game.
A customer at BetRivers wagered $1,000 on both Seattle’s Jason Myers (100-1) and New England’s Andy Borregales (300-1) to be named MVP of Super Bowl 60. The bet on Myers would return $100,000, with the wager on Borregales paying out $300,000 should they win MVP.
A BetRivers spokesperson noted the book has “only a handful” of MVP bets on kickers, “although several of them are relatively large.”
Caesars Sportsbook Head of Football Trading Joey Feazel noted that Borregales attracted some interest there, as well.
“Longer odds, that’s really what a lot of bettors are trying to find during the Super Bowl, something that’s not the greatest probability, but it has a decent price,” Feazel said.
Seven of the last 10 Super Bowl MVPs have been quarterbacks. Seattle’s Sam Darnold (+115) is the betting favorite to win Super Bowl MVP at FanDuel.
One-Way Action on Seattle, Super Bowl Spread Holds Firm
The annual pattern for betting on the Big Game typically sees a late surge of public money, and “as much as 80% of action is still to come” on Super Bowl 60.
“We’ll see the overwhelming majority of action come in this weekend, with a ton of action on Sunday,” Feazel said.
Despite “one-way traffic” on the Seahawks, the spread remains Seattle -4.5 at Caesars. There was some early movement with Seattle reaching -5, but the line has remained largely the same since odds opened on Jan. 25.
“The line is at 4.5, and it’s gonna stay at 4.5,” Feazel said. “There’s not gonna be much moving around between now and Sunday. That’s usually how the Super Bowl goes.”
Needs & Liabilities Become Clear at Caesars, Other Sportsbooks
When it comes to the spread and moneyline, the “need is pretty clear for Caesars and several other sportsbooks across the nation.”
“We’re gonna need that Super Bowl middle,” Feazel said. “The Seahawks win, but don’t cover.”
Prop bets are also a major factor in a sportsbook’s success, or lack thereof, on Super Bowl Sunday. They attract more handle than the game’s outcome.
“You’ve got to beat specific props to have a good day,” Feazel said. “We’re trying to avoid there being a safety or the game going to overtime, or a non-QB to throw a touchdown pass.”
He added, “You’ve got to beat the props customers love to bet, year in and year out.”
