Points might be at a premium when NIU and Toledo tangle tonight in midweek MAC action. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
NIU (2-6 SU, 2-6 ATS) scores just 13.4 points per game, ranking the Huskies No. 134 nationally among 136 FBS teams. NIU ranks dead last in yards per pass and No. 133 in yards per play.
Now, NIU takes on Toledo (4-4 SU, 5-3 ATS) and a defense that ranks seventh in opponent yards per play (4.2). DraftKings is offering Toledo -14.5 and a paltry total of 41.5. There has been some decent two-way betting on the spread, with 55% of tickets on the favored Rockets.
NIU vs. Toledo Best Bet: Total (OVER/UNDER)
UNDER 42.5 (-115 at BetMGM)
NIU snapped a six-game losing streak in last week’s 21-7 win over Ball State. That’s the good news. The bad news? That marked its highest scoring output in a game this season.
NIU scored just nine points against Maryland and 10 against Mississippi State early in the year, but it’s also struggled against lesser teams. The Huskies scored a combined 13 points in losses to San Diego State and Eastern Michigan.
Defensively, NIU performs much better. The Huskies rank 40th nationally in allowing just 22.9 points per contest. That helps set us up for a nice play on the UNDER.
NIU has gone 6-2 to the UNDER this season, with Toledo 4-4. Look for both defenses to excel tonight.
NIU vs. Toledo Best Bet: Against the Spread
Toledo -14.5 (-110 at DraftKings)
Toledo has three straight wins over NIU. The defense has been all but unstoppable on home turf, giving up a combined 13 points in the last three games contested at the Glass Bowl. The Rockets are a perfect 4-0 SU and ATS at home.
NIU hasn’t won in four road games so far this year. The Huskies are just 1-3 ATS in road tilts, too. Look for those trends to continue tonight.
Both of our MAC spread bets won yesterday, with Akron and Ohio taking care of business. Roll with the Rockets, who’ve been utterly dominant at home this season, to win and cover tonight.
Best Player Prop for Toledo Rockets
Tucker Gleason OVER 229.5 Passing Yards (-114 at FanDuel)
Running back Chip Trayanum remains sidelined with an undisclosed injury. That puts some added workload on QB Tucker Gleason, who has surpassed this passing-yard total in four consecutive games. Check out that recent production:
- 237 yards vs. Akron
- 264 yards vs. Bowling Green
- 294 yards vs. Kent State
- 238 yards vs. Washington State
During that span, Gleason has thrown nine TD passes compared to just two interceptions.
